It is difficult to imagine how sophisticated search engines are – at least I have problems getting my head around their sophistication. It is all about algorithms, I know, but I am still amazed at what these spiders, or whatever we want to call them, can compute. Keeping their sophistication in mind, don’t try to fool them! Search engines can recognise and penalise hidden text, cloaking (showing different content to search engines than to human visitors) and keyword spamming. These practices could lead to your website being banned by search engines and will certainly harm your page ranking. The outcome will be that you will not be found online which negates having your website out there. Keep your marketing above board and keep in mind that the spiders probably have their beady eyes on you right now! Just kidding.

Whilst links, both external and internal, are important aspects of your SEO strategy, external links present a problem. We would all like to have as many links coming to our website as possible but in order to have that advantage most of us have to give away links as well. Only those big, popular websites which have many links coming to them don’t have to worry about giving away links but in order to get big and popular… you see the dilemma?

When “exchanging” links it is important to be fair and exchange a link which search engines can follow but sometimes it is necessary to link to another website or blog where it is only necessary for humans to follow the link and not the search engines. In this case you can use a “no follow” link. An example of a no follow link could be :

<a href=”http://websiteaddress.com” rel=”nofollow”>My own website</a>

Keyword spamming or stuffing is an unethical search engine optimisation technique and occurs when keywords are overused in content or meta-tags. Often keywords are used which have no relevance to the website but they are used to try to drive traffic via search engines to the site. This method of keyword stuffing has resulted in search engines changing algorithms, to a certain extent, to avoid having keywords play such a major role in ranking websites and it has also caused them to penalise websites which employ this method. Search engines now use related and themed keyword techniques to understand the content on a website page.

Because of the threat of being penalised many webmasters are afraid of using too many keywords (see information on how to use keywords correctly) but the golden rule is that if the content is “human friendly” in terms of readability then there is probably no threat that the site will be penalised.

It is important to understand that each time you link to a page, a post or to another site, you are “leaking” from your own site. In other words you are making your site weaker in terms of being ranked by search engines. Linking is a double edged sword and needs to be executed with care. If a page or post on someone else’s website is not important to your own SEO strategy you should not link to them. There is a “no follow” code which can be used but more about that in another post.

Internal links are cross links created within your own site and developing internal links is an important strategy in training the search engines that your site is relevant. Internal links also help humans to navigate your site more easily. Link to related pages and posts, don’t make random links.

External links are those links which leave your site and connect with another website. It is the external links which “leak” your SEO “energy” (for want of better words to explain!). Use external links sparingly and only where absolutely necessary.

Content is king when it comes to your website marketing and search engine strategy and it is very important to place relevant keywords into relevant contant. By using relevant content which is published frequently you can send your website to the top of search engine results. It is good to know that something as simple as content can get one ranked.

Keywords are used in meta data, of course, but they are also part of the way that search engines determine how relevant your website is for those searching for information. Try to use keywords naturally in the content because ultimately it will be humans reading what you write. One way is to write naturally, not thinking about keywords, and then go back and place keywords as naturally as you can.

Good places for keywords are in the headline, any headings or subheadings and in the first and last paragraphs of your content.

Your Meta Description does not affect your placement or ranking in search engine results but it is extremely important for the humans who find the listing on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). This is because the meta description is what people see and it is this which helps them determine whether to click on your link or not. With this in mind it is easy to understand that a high ranking will have no meaning whatsoever if nobody clicks on your website link.

Meta data (meta descriptions are one component of meta data) serves two purposes which is; a) to tell search engines what your website is about and b) to show up in search results which tells people about your site.

There are some key points to note when writing your meta description:

There is a limit of 140 characters. If a meta description is not specified the search engine will either automatically use the first 140 characters of your post or page for the description or it will examine the content on your page for what it supposes is the best description. This means leaving things to chance which is not a good idea.

The meta description should be worded in a natural way because it will be a person reading the description.

Keywords should be used in the meta descriptions but don’t over use them because this may make the description unintelligible for the human reading it.

Don’t ignore your images when it comes to Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) because traffic from images is extremely underrated. Since search engines cannot read images but they can read the metatags, titles and descriptions you give each image. Help the search engines to find you by using images to their best advantage.

Give all images an ALT (alternative) and TITLE arrributes because this is equivalent of a metadescription for the page or a document title. Image filenames should also have a relevant name and if possible put a keyword in the file name. A file name may make sense to the person constructing the website but it must also make sense to the search engine – for example if you give the image the file name “nelson1.jpg” it will mean something to you but not the search engine, rather call it “nelsonmandelaspeech.jpg”

Remember to not make your images too “heavy”, they should be of a manageable size and preferably in .png or .jpg

According to Wikipedia, an algorithm is:

“In mathematics and computer science, an algorithm Listeni/ˈælɡərɪðəm/ is an effective method expressed as a finite list[1] of well-defined instructions[2] for calculating a function.[3] Algorithms are used for calculation, data processing, and automated reasoning. In simple words an algorithm is a step-by-step procedure for calculations.

Starting from an initial state and initial input (perhaps empty),[4] the instructions describe a computation that, when executed, will proceed through a finite [5] number of well-defined successive states, eventually producing “output”[6] and terminating at a final ending state. The transition from one state to the next is not necessarily deterministic; some algorithms, known as randomized algorithms, incorporate random input.[7]

A partial formalization of the concept began with attempts to solve the Entscheidungs problem (the “decision problem”) posed by David Hilbert in 1928. Subsequent formalizations were framed as attempts to define “effective calculability”[8] or “effective method”;[9] those formalizations included the Gödel–Herbrand–Kleene recursive functions of 1930, 1934 and 1935, Alonzo Church’s lambda calculus of 1936, Emil Post’s “Formulation 1″ of 1936, and Alan Turing’s Turing machines of 1936–7 and 1939. Giving a formal definition of algorithms, corresponding to the intuitive notion, remains a challenging problem.[10]“

Algorithms are important for websites because search engines constantly change their algorithms to stay ahead of the pack. Their algorithms are kept secret and it is therefore not easy to know what the search engines are looking for in terms of which websites they will rank more highly than others. However, there is a simple rule; make your website relevant to what you offer, make it human friendly, give plenty of information (which must also be relevant) and you should be on the right track.

Although most of us understand that SEO is important we don’t really know what is involved nor how to go about getting the results we would like. There are so many facets to SEO and in addition to that things keep changing and it is difficult to keep up, even for those who work with optimising websites for search engines.

The fact is that SEO is vital if you are to be found online by search engines and unless someone knows your website address and types it into the navigation bar they are going to have to use a search engine. The many components of search engine optimisation include metatags, content, links both internal and external. Ultimately though, your website must be practical for humans to use and it is important to keep that in mind when applying search engine techniques.

To sum up, SEO is extremely important and even more important is that it is done so that in the end people actually click on your website. Use proven techniques which have good possibility of withstanding the constant changes to the search engines’ algorithims.

If you are writing content for your website to enhance your chances of being found online by search engines DO NOT copy and paste content (articles or copy) from the web. Search engines are capable of figuring out if content has been plagiarised and then the content is worthless. It is even possible for search engines to figure out if you have copied and scrambled the wording.

Search engines are capable of matching content on the web in extraordinarly quick time. Considering how much content there is on the web this is an amazing feature. It is interesting to see how cunning search engines are because even scrambling content is difficult and really should not be done. This means that content must be fresh and it must also be relevant to your business or the website on which the content is placed. You cannot out-fox the crawlers!

It is not common knowledge that content (articles, copy, or what you write) on your website is extremely important. Why is it important? Well, it is the job of search engines (or web crawlers) to give those searching for information the information they are looking for and one way to do this is to find content which closely matches what has been asked for. The search engines try to match up “meta-tags” with the content on each page. It is therefore important that meta-tags (keywords, descriptions etc.) correspond with words in the content. This requires some skill on the part of the person writing content because whilst the content needs to be interspersed with keywords it must, at the same time, be human friendly. In other words the content on a website should be easy to read and it must make sense.

You might think that there is a simple answer; just copy and paste content from the web. Surprisingly this does not work! Search engines have become extremely intelligent and can detect if you have plagiarised. In fact they can even tell if you have copied and scrambled something. I know, I know… it doesn’t seem possible but I have tested time and time again and this is the truth. This means that your content has to be fresh and well written and interspersed with keywords.

Content has become one of the most important marketing tools on the web. Happy writing!

I have not had better service from anybody in my life – and that is not an exaggeration!
I needed a website but was at a total loss at where to start. Fortunately I met Lyn and upon a recommendation from Mike Clarke of Clarke of the Karoo, I contacted Lyn. Great was my relief when Lyn went out of her way to visit me for four hours to discuss my site, get to know me and really make an effort to try and find out what I need. I spoke to other website designers to help me with my site, but they wanted me to do the concepts and the content and I was totally unable to do so, so never got round to it.
After speaking to me, Lyn, without saying much presented me with a website that represents my psyche, my spirit and what I stand for and do. Even the colours she chose were perfect. The wording is excellent – as if she were a lawyer herself. It just showed me what a good listener Lyn is, because what I do and what I needed to say is complex if you are not a lawyer yourself. Lyn clinched the concepts perfectly well. I was overwhelmed beause the website was EVERYTHING I wanted and more. It is extremely professional and what I like most about it is that it reflects ME as a person. It’s like manifesting what I had in my head. I don’t know how she did it, but she did. Apart from that, Lyn took the trouble to stay in touch, to prompt me when it was due, to take time out to help me brainstorm and conceptualise things and better yet, with her background as a journalist, her expertise on language and editing is invaluable. Thank you Lyn! I am most appreciative! I recommend Lyn to anybody who wishes to have a good, solid website that reflects themselves. Company: Attorney, Empowerlaw
